An industry training centre and a division of McCarthy, the Academy is the largest NQF automotive training provider in South Africa. It provides training for 900 learnerships annually and 12 000 man training days are completed each year, says Steve Collins, Group Service Manager at McCarthy.
Admission to the Academy requires a minimum C average Matric qualification with both mathematics and science compulsory. The selection criteria, however, goes beyond academic skills and learners must undergo an engineering evaluation to ascertain whether they are mechanically-minded. With today’s automotive artisans increasingly required to communicate with car owners, learners must also undergo an interpersonal skills evaluation to ensure their ability to interface efficiently and effectively with customers.
“Keeping abreast of the latest technological developments in the automotive industry is very costly,” says Collins “so the learners passing through the academy are going to derive enormous benefit from their exposure to training on the Sandero. The Renault Sandero will be used in a number of our training programmes ranging from caring for customers’ property, correct servicing and maintenance procedures and practical diagnostics.”
